Wales Women’s National Coalition – update & call to action

17 May

Hi all,

Please see below, from the Director of Wales Women’s National Coalition – the only umbrella body for women’s organisations in Wales, representing the views of their memberships to policymakers at all levels. Having been founded when Wales was devolved and core-funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, they have recently been notified that they will no longer receive ANY government funding.
Given the lack of women’s representation in the current UK Government, and the lack of any other organisation representing women in Wales at policy level, this is very worrying! Please send the letter below and forward widely if poss. More info about the work that WWNC carry out is available on their website.
Thanks very much!

Women in Wales are let down: the bitter facts

In this day and age where Political Representation for women is blatantly declining, Poverty for women is rising and Violence against Women is still an on-going issue it seems highly short-sighted of Welsh Assembly Government to allow the only representative membership network organisation, campaigning on these issues in Wales, to die.  However, such is the decision WWNC has been notified of today (14 May 2010).
Apparently, there is no need for such an organisation to represent the women of Wales. WWNC will close at the end of June 2010.  Wales will be the only UK nation without international representation for women, or collated representation on behalf of women into policy and decision-making.  In England and Scotland, the equivalent organisations providing these services are 100% government funded.

  • Please challenge the decision made by Carl Sargeant, Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Social Justice, by writing to him and the First Minister Carwyn Jones.

  • Write to Carl Sargeant ( and Carwyn Jones (, postal address: Welsh Assembly Government, Cardiff Bay CF99 1NA. Please refer to the points made in WWNC’s briefing in your correspondence. Personalsed emails/letters work best.
  • Let WWNC know the action that you have taken by emailing
