Today, the Welsh Assembly Government are launching a national public awareness campaign looking at everyday behaviours towards women and linking these commonplace behaviours with violence against women.
It’s quite a big step forward from the usual approach of raising awareness of support services and placing the responsibility on women to come forward once abuse has already happened; this campaign is more about encouraging widespread attitudinal change among men. It looks at how violence against women is just the extreme end of a spectrum of gendered behaviours, many of which (on the other end of the spectrum) are very commonplace and seen as “natural”, harmless or unchangeable.
There’s a campaign website and there’ll be TV ads (during the World Cup), billboard posters, washroom posters, phonebox posters etc across Wales. There’s a discussion section on the website, would be great to get some comments up there from CFN members!
